4 Reviews of the Studland 8 Classic

I agree with all the above comments. A fantastic tent once pitched, although the weight does offer a challenge in a 'strong breeze'!, as found to our cost in Wales this summer. On pitching the wind caught the front canopy and the subsequent crash snapped several poles. I contacted Kampa directly only to be informed that they do not supply spare pole sets, hence a £1000 tent written off, ridiculous! Anyway as we have had the tent for over a year and had used it before this trip we knew the tent was brilliant,so replaced like for like we have used it twice 1wk & 2wk and loved the space and setup, many lovely comments from other campers. In regards to its waterproofness, again can not fault it, we had heavy rain and gust upto 45mph over the 2days on the holiday and there was no issues to report. I would have given 10 out of 10 if Kampa had been able to provide spares.

Love this tent once its up!
OHs idea to get one-very heavy and difficult to pitch especially when windy
Very waterproof-withstood Bank Holiday downpours which caused other tents to flood;eyebrow window canopies excellent idea
Footprint groundsheet a must to help position the tent on the pitch
Would go for filey 6 classic next time

The other review by cmarkod is very thorough, and with which I'm in total agreement, so I'll only add a few comments.
The weight listed above appears to be wrong - Kampa advised the following (I haven't measured myself):
Carton 1: 92 x 41 x 34, G.W: 36.3KGS, N.W: 34.4KGS, Flysheet are packed in this carton
Carton 2: 92 x 38 x 27, G.W: 19.3KGS, N.W: 17.7KGS, Inner tents are packed in this carton
Carton 3: 102 x 36 x 25, G.W: 20.0KGS, N.W: 18.1KGS, Frames are packed in this carton
So total weight is about 70kg, not 58kg. This tent is heavy and bulky - it comes reasonably close to filling up our large car boot to the bottom of the window line (Land Rover Discover 3). You'll need a large car or trailer for this tent.
We've found success using the Gary Cross method: pegging out the footprint, then pegging out the flysheet over the top, putting in a central pole hoop, lifting it, then working outwards from there one pole at a time. My OH helps with lifting up the first pole or two, then I can do the rest. Definitely construct the poles as you feed them through, rather than making the full hoops up beforehand. We then add the ZIG, so it goes over the top of the tension bands. Finally adjust the poles and peg out, then go back inside and put in the roof tensioning pole and hang the bedrooms.
Note this tent is tall - I'm 5' 11' and need to stand on our cooler box to attach the roof tensioning pole, bedrooms and insulating roof sheet (if we decide to use it).
We love this tent, main pluses being superior quality, huge space, and lovely canopy area at the front, but the downside is it's like a gym workout to pitch and strike, especially if there's only one of you (OH has to entertain our young children most of the time). I haven't timed it, but I think it takes about 90 minutes for me to pitch it mostly single-handedly, including pegging and adding bedrooms.
We've camped with it three times, and haven't seen another tent we'd prefer to be in, but we are jealous when we see how quickly other people are able to pitch and strike with their 'lesser' quality/size tents!

By: Cmarkod Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2011 Rating:
This tent is great for my family. Pitching: Relatively straightforward. I could just about manage this on my own but is easier with help from OH. As the tent is very large, the optional footprint is very helpful in guiding where to pitch. The pitching itself consists of Zig then flysheet then zipping together. I've not yet decided if detaching and reattaching the tension bands or feeding the ZIG over them is the way forward but I'll continue to trial and update. Once the ZIG is attached, then next step is to feed the poles through the polesleeves. All poles same size so very straight forward. Kampa guidelines recommend gathering the poles and walking out from the front but I tried from the front and back and found fro the back easier. There are lots and lots of peeing points both on the ZIG and flysheet and it does take time to fully peg out but its very stable once all are in.
Internally the tent is huge! There are three bedrooms at the back of the tent and one at the front. The remaining living space is plenty big enough for my 6ft table and chairs and all others gear. There is also a useful side area that can be used as a toilet room or for storage. Ventilation options are also excellent. I pitched this for the first time on a sunny day with outside temperature of 30c and once all vents were opened, the inside of the tent was noticeably cooler than outside. There are two noseeum mesh panels on the front door and over each of the 4 windows down the length of the tent. There re further vents at the rear of the tents and the tent inners have corresponding mesh inserts. The toilet/storage area also has noseeum mesh panel to the outside of the tent.
There is ample light entry to the tent courtesy of four large side windows and two large panoramic windows at the front od the tent. A daylight panel passes down the length of the roof and allows further light in. This light makes minimal entry into the sleeping compartments however and the sleeptite system is very effective at keeping the inners subdued even in bright sunlight. The inners have noseeum mesh on the doors too for added ventilation. The only downside to this is that light floods in once the fabric panel is rolled away.
With regard to weatherproofness, I've not had it in the rain yet but I did thoroughly soak it on several occasions to weather it and no water entered the tent even under the pressure of a hosepipe. It was very windy when I first pitched it and it did feel unstable until fully guyed out but then it was solid as a rock! Canopies over the four side windows allow for ventilation even if its throwing it down outside so should be good for the UK then!
With regard to packing away, it is a reversal of the pitching guide. I had hoped to keep the ZIG in place to speed up pitch time but it makes the tent size unmanageable and it definitely won't fit back in the bag with this in place. It should be noted that the tent comes in several large bags. A very heavy one containing the flysheet, another moderately heavy one with the poles and a lighter one with the inners, roof liner and ZIG. The included pegs were of much higher quality than I expected although I have still replaced some with rock pegs. A repair kit is included too.
Colour scheme is nice in cream/brown and Kampa have ditched the fluorescent yellow zips for this year replacing them with colours to match the flysheet.
My only criticism of this tent is the size of the front inner which is 120cm wide and will not accept standard double mattresses. The area of the tent would easily accommodate a few more centimetres of inner to make this a more usable inner and that is the only reason that I haven't given a rating of 10.

Manufacturer's Description
The Studland 8 Classic has flexible accommodation for up to eight people with extravagant interior living space to match. The 4 + 2 + 2 inner tent configuration allows you to set up only those bedrooms you need for that particular trip. The small front inner tent is ideal for a teenager. The interior feels spacious due to the generous headroom and the natural light entering through the Daylight Panel. The large en-suite toilet/storage area is a really useful space and has its own privacy door. The front panel can either be rolled partly to one side to create a doorway or the whole panel can be completely rolled away and for 2011, the front panel features two large panoramic windows. This, along with the zip out windows and side door, can create a real ‘alfresco’ atmosphere on those hot summer days and there’s no problem opening this front panel because it’s protected by the large built in canopy. New for this season is the Kampa roof lining that insulates the living area. The Studland 8 Classic is manufactured using our Airflow poly-cotton material that keeps the tent snug and warm during inclement weather but allows the tent to breathe and keeps it cool in hot weather. The ultimate Kampa tent.
